12 Days of Happy Tails: Meet Luna
For our 9th feature of 12 Days of Happy Tails, it’s all about Luna, formerly known as Zabella!
This sweet girl joined our pack as a little 3-month-old pup in late February after a long ride from our partner shelter in Kentucky. Right off the transport van, she was met by her foster and taken to her home to relax and settle in. But for those first few days in her foster’s home, her foster noticed that she was lethargic for a puppy and also didn’t do much eating or drinking.
Luna’s incredible foster mom realized that this was more than just a pup getting acclimated to a new city. After she let our team know about Luna's condition, we took her to the vet, where it was determined that Luna had contracted parvovirus, a highly contagious and potentially deadly virus found in puppies and young dogs. Without treatment, the mortality rate of the parvovirus is 90%, so there was a real possibility that Luna would not survive.
We knew we needed to act quickly and immediately started treatment for Luna, including needed medications, fluids, bloodwork and an overnight stay at the vet, for her to have the best chance of surviving.
After a long weekend being monitored at the emergency vet, Luna began to recover and was discharged to her foster home, where she continued to grow stronger and more energetic each day.
Luna is now their constant companion and an indispensable member of the family and neighborhood. She has the very important jobs of being the little canine sister to her 10-year-old human brother, Mikkel, Paulino’s morning coffee companion and Renee’s running buddy.
She’s notorious in the ‘hood for insisting on belly rubs. Luna lives for her long walks in the East River Park and her romps with her many neighborhood doggie pals.
Luna truly comes alive when the family ventures upstate. She loves a good road trip! Life doesn’t get much better than when they’re all running around the fields and woods upstate, chasing bees, balls, and butterflies.
Although Luna had a rough start in her journey, our Muddy Paws Pack couldn’t be happier to see her happy, healthy and thriving in her forever home now.
