Welcome to the 4th adoption feature of 12 Days of Happy Tails! Today, we're introducing a happy little pup named Zurie, formerly known as Britney Spears!)

Earlier this year, in July, our Muddy Paws Pack visited Dallas for the Best Friends Animal Society Conference to share lifesaving ideas with our fellow animal welfare professionals. Feeling inspired by the incredible conversations and the progress we've made together as a community to save more lives, we couldn't help a little piece of Dallas home to NYC via a lovely little Chihuahua lady from the Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center with help from our friends at Hearts and Bones Rescue.

As soon as Zurie was brought out from her kennel to meet us, we were greeted with a furiously wiggly butt and tail wags. Although she was covered in fleas, she wasn't shy about saying hi to every person and getting all the loving scratches she could. It didn't take long for us to decide on this happy pup, and we soon brought her back to her hotel for a much-needed bath.

As it was a last-minute rescue, we needed to find a foster quickly. And Kris, one of our amazing fosters was willing to take in another pup on short notice. After a short flight back to NYC, where Zurie was completely perfect and snoozed on our laps the whole time, her future foster mama Kris picked her up. They rode the subway together, Zurie bathing Kris’s face in sweet doggie kisses all the way home.

Kris had been grieving the loss of her adopted chihuahua, Captain, who passed away two weeks before she met Zurie, so she hadn’t expected to adopt again so soon.

But her connection with Zurie was so instant and pure that she had to go from being foster mama to her real adoptive mama.

Kris says what made her so certain Zurie was hers was the way she embraced her new life with zero hesitation. Nothing was familiar, everything entirely new and she loved it all. Kris says, “No soul is perfect but Zurie is to me and for my little family.”

And since her adoption, Zurie’s been a superb step sister to several foster siblings, and is quickly developing an extensive mostly purple wardrobe — the color for this beloved bat dog.

From meeting her wiggly butt in the shelter to seeing her living her best life in NYC, Zurie's heartwarming journey reminds us that there are so many perfect little dogs just waiting for their second chance to live out their happy lives.
