Goldie's Road to Recovery

After reviewing the list of dogs that were available for rescues at NYC Animal Care Centers last month, 5-year-old Goldie immediately caught our eye. Soon after, Sarah - a first time foster with us - picked Goldie up and helped her settle in to her new home. It wasn’t long until we all saw how sweet and friendly she was with everyone she met, despite a nagging residual cough and congestion.

It’s not uncommon for our pups like Goldie to have some residual kennel cough when they arrive in our care directly from a shelter, but after a few days of Goldie’s cough not improving and her lack of interest in food, our team decided she needed a closer look at her health.

Unfortunately, her visit to the vet confirmed that she had pneumonia, which required additional medication and close monitoring of her appetite.

In total, the cost of Goldie’s medical care exceeded $7,500.

To our dismay, 24 hours later, Goldie’s foster alerted us that Goldie was unable to keep her medication down and still wasn’t eating. Our team made the decision to bring her to Animal Medical Center (AMC) where she was hospitalized for around-the-clock care.

After three days, Goldie finally started to show improvement and was able to head home with her foster. Her spirits were much brighter and she was very much enjoying the steady trick diet of chicken and turkey to sneak her medicine in.

With the Pack Challenge underway, we are asking for your help to meet our goal of raising at least $150,000 for dogs in our care just like Goldie. Your gift will help to ensure that we can continue to give Goldie the medical care she needs, and provide support to our other pups should they also experience unexpected medical emergencies or costly ongoing treatments.

Today, Goldie is recovering, taking each day one step at a time, and will soon be available for adoption! Thank you for your support!
