12 Days of Happy Tails: Meet Pig
Our final adoption story for our 12 Days of Happy Tails for 2019 is about someone you may already know, but her adoption story is so special, we needed to tell it again. Today we are featuring the very wonderful, Pig!
Pig, originally named Randi, joined the Muddy Paws Pack through the New Hope Partner program at the New York Animal Care Center back in September 2018. She arrived as a scared and anxious girl, and was nervous about navigating New York City.
After settling into her foster home, her incredible foster mama noticed that Pig wasn’t responding when her name was called and typical training methods weren’t working. Her foster mama knew this wasn’t usual dog behavior and alerted us, so we brought her to the vet to have some tests done, where it was discovered our sweet girl was deaf!
After her diagnosis, Pig started remote collar training. We purchased a special collar that vibrates once a button is pushed, so Pig would know when we needed her attention. Paired with additional behavior training through our friends at Kapooch Training, our smart girl got the hang of it and her confidence grew every day.
She soon opened up into a cuddly goofball - and her excitement came through in the form of pig-like grunts. Paired with her low-rider stature, and her love of being held like a baby, she was renamed "Pig" to fit her newly discovered personality and it fit her like a glove!
During her time in our foster care, she lived with a few different families (shout out to Erin, Quynhanh, Brianna, Madeline, and our own MPR founder, Rachael) and found herself making friends with several different resident and adoptable dogs. She played well with everyone, big dogs included, and as a bonus - never barked when the doorbell rang!
We knew this sweet girl needed a special forever family who would be able to understand how to communicate with her and give her the love she very much deserved.
After many months of looking, in February 2019, she found her family in Carmen!
Carmen, Pig, and her feline sister, Midnite now reside in the Bronx, where Pig is living her best life. She’s affectionately known as “Ms. Piggy Possum” for her snorting and possum-like tendencies. Pig sleeps the nights away in her king-size bed, and won’t get up until she receives her daily massage, which turns the snoring into cat-like purrs.
Pig is a mega champ at sofa relaxing but don’t let that fool you! She can keep up with all the outside activities. Playtime is a blast as Pig, Midnite and Muddy Paws alum, Armani, run around inside and outside trying to outlast the other until they all layout and take over the sofa for nap time.
And Carmen’s 4-year-old-niece is totally in love with her.
Pig is an ambassador for Pitties and deaf dogs everywhere — proving that with love, caring and the right family, every dog can find happiness.
