Train Your Pup for Success with Calm Canine Academy!
Whether you’ve just adopted a 12-week old Australian Cattle puppy or an adult Greyhound, we at Muddy Paws Rescue strongly recommend providing training for your new furry friend—especially in a bustling, tight-spaced concrete jungle like NYC.
Enter Calm Canine Academy: founded by Karishma Warr, Calm Canine Academy seeks to provide you and your pup with all the tools needed for a happy and healthy bond built on mutual respect, love, and fun! Karishma founded Calm Canine Academy when she noticed the dog training world was missing scientific-based, humane training—especially for dogs in urban environments. You can read more about Karishma and the CCA team here.
Calm Canine Academy offers a variety of training, from foundational puppy training to positive communication methods, behavioral correction, and group classes (both in person and virtual!).
We’re so happy to announce that Calm Canine Academy has teamed up with us at Muddy Paws to bring you the Urban Dog Rescue Series—a four-part training series that can help guide you through the initial stages of raising your pup in the city, whether you’re fostering for a few weeks or providing a forever home!
Set Up for Success
Before getting into the nitty gritty of training your pup, it’s important to understand some of the common behavioral issues you may run into and how to properly manage them. Learn about stress and decompression, safety and management, canine body language, therapeutic enrichment, and therapeutic play.
Separation & Confinement
Eventually, you’ll have to leave your new pup alone—and it’s likely they won’t enjoy it at first! However, making sure your pup has their own safe space where they can decompress is key. Part 2 discusses crate training, stress reduction and relaxation techniques, separation anxiety, and more.
Fear, Aggression, & Reactivity - In the Home
Urban environments contain a plethora of sights, smells, and sounds—many of which can be extremely stimulating and stressful to pups who are already in the midst of acclimating to a new home. With this stress can come fear, aggression, and reactivity, even while inside of your apartment. Learn how to manage these responses and get your pup on the path to confidence and fearlessness.
Fear, Aggression, & Reactivity - On Leash Walks
Walking a new pup in the hustle and bustle of the city can be one of the toughest tasks to master, especially a pup who is still scared of the city sounds (and other dogs… pigeons… the list goes on). In Part 4, Karishma covers how you can help to make walks fun, enjoyable, and fear-free—for both your pup and for you.
We’re so thankful to Karishma and the team at Calm Canine Academy for partnering with us to share their training tips, and we are looking forward to providing our Muddy Paws Pack with even more Calm Canine coaching this year!
